This model, developed by Elizabeth Bates and Brian MacWhinney, views grammatical forms as driven by and shaped by communicative functions. The model was proposed in 1982 and has been the subject of 45 empirical articles. It plays an important role in research on first and second language learning, and the study of language disorders.
