An example is an instance of a knowledge component or of one more applications of a knowledge component (see worked examples). For instance, the following is an example of the algebra knowledge component, subtracting from both sides of an equation to isolate a variable term:

 x+5 = 18
   x = 18-5

An example of the past-tense rule in English for regular verbs (to add "ed") is:

The past tense of "jump" is "jumped".

Providing examples is a form of implicit instruction.
